Michelle Obama’s fashion gets criticized by the huge timers
It was destined to happen. There are some people who hate on Michelle Obama’s fashion choices – who knew the haters would be within the fashion society?
From Jason Wu to Junya Watanabe, Michelle O has been donning designs by emerging designers and labels that only diehard fashionistas would be acquainted with. But some people aren’t to happy about that. According to our friends at the Huffington Post (via WWD), the big names in fashion are doubtful of her wardrobe – particularly the pieces she wore to her recent trip to Europe. Oscar de la Renta was at the front of the line when it came to the disapproval:

“American fashion right now is harassed,” says Oscar de la Renta. “I think I recognize what [Obama and her advisers] are doing, but I don’t think that is the right memorandum at this particular point….I don’t object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it’s incorrect to go in one direction only.”

Other big time designers like Vera Wang and Donna Karan also put their two cents in about Michelle, but they were more positive about it.

My two cents? These big name designers are already accomplished and household names. Why not let the more incomprehensible designers shine through? There’s enough room in the fashion community for everyone to get a portion of the limelight. The Obamas are all about change, so why not change the way the world thinks about fashion? Plus, Michelle is rockin’ some serious lavishness labels like Thakoon with the current class of an in-vogue woman.
