PETER COPPING has been named as the new artistic director at Nina Ricci. The designer – who earlier worked under the creative direction of Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton – replaces Olivier Theyskens, who left the Paris fashion house rashly in March following rumours that his contract would not be transformed in October. Having started in his new role on Monday, Copping is getting to grips with his first job of designing a capsule resort collection which will be sold in the label’s flagship store on Avenue Montaigne.

“I think it’s a name with a very nice olden time. I love all the French fashionisms, and Nina Ricci is very much a French house. It’s going to feel very close to all the things I personally like,” Copping, who is a measure off from the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, told WWD. Noting a desire to broaden the label’s plea, he added: “We want to move away from a girl and be more about a woman. I want the clothes to be very tactile, very comfortable – the kind of clothes a woman enjoys wearing.”
.
Mario Grauso, head of the label’s parent, company Puig Fashion Group, said: “I think Peter’s very tuned into the consumer [who is] a very real woman.” It is thought that Copping will not stage his first catwalk show awaiting next March, enabling him to fully understand the brand.
