Fashion Week in Kazakhstan is about to get underway in the country’s former capital, Almaty. It is the biggest Central Asian industry event for regional designers and stylists to platform their work and the show will also feature designers from China and Europe. Kazakhstan’s biannual Fashion Week is now in its seventh year and the host city, Almaty, is still Kazakhstan’s multinational cultural centre. Three days of catwalks are planned, as well as beauty therapy master classes and a regional stylists’ competition. Castings were held earlier this week at the Hotel Kazakhstan to choose the models that will make it onto the catwalk.
Around 500 models from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan came for the selection process. Chief stylist, Maria Rozakhonova has lost count of the number of worldwide collaborations there have been over the years. Organiser Sayat Dossybayev who has been running the show since it began says “Kazakhstan Fashion Week is increasingly attracting the attention of professionals from the wider area and beyond.†This year’s Fashion Week theme is Lizedeyki, which translates loosely as ‘female deceitfulness’. Aigul says her designs reflect an element of female performance. But she also emphasises her commitment to incorporate an ethnic Kazakh theme in her work.
Kazakhstan is Central Asia’s important economy but it has been hit hard by the global financial downturn. There had been fears that headline events would suffer, but it seems this Kazakhstan Fashion Week is gritty to be as bold as ever.
The Kazakhstan Fashion show runs from May 14-16 2009.
