Some cities just know how to motivate. New York’s skyline and the vistas of Paris have gotten many a designer’s imaginative juices flowing over the years. Empty the streets of their populace, press pause on the marvelous energy that feeds them and the urban shell you’re left with would still arouse an artist’s intuition, whether his poison is paints, music or fashion. Brasilia is no unusual. This weekend saw Brazil’s capital wrap up its own Fashion Week, adding to the kaleidoscope of styles already on show in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Echoes of Brasilia’s utopian character were etched across many of the looks on the runways.
Sandra Lima untrue up the bold contour and atrocious lines of Brasilia’s retro modernist architecture by suspending padded boleros and bulbous harness vests from slender romper suits in a controlled palette of pinky flesh and black. Romildo Nascimento also kept the silhouette sharp and the tone inconspicuous. Others, however, decided that fun and mental power should go hand in hand much like the city itself – which was purpose-built in the late Fifties with the overt goals of order and purpose but which from an airborne view has the cheeky layout of – yes – an airplane.
Clarice Garcia’s compilation was built around the rebel manifesto that post-modernism is dead and duly deconstructed casual day dresses into irregular blocks of carnation, tangerine and orchid. Camila Prado’s mini Op Art patterns were doused in confectionary colours for a pool party – the only way to get wet in the region’s arid savanna. Bem Me Quero and Concretamente Brasilia paid respect to local desert plants by stitching naïve needlework and appliques onto a sun-baked canvas of sienna, ochre and teal cotton. Talentos do Brasil put emblems of neighboring regions through a cheerful pop culture filter – transform original crafts into perky handbags fluctuation from the arms of gaucho cowgirls riding in from the pampas prairies exhausting tunics and hotpants.
