Quentin Veron Creates Antiestablishment Furs

“Fur needs to be dusted off and get a little more youth and fresh spirit,” says Paris-based designer Quentin Veron, whose collection of fox, beaver, and finn raccoon topcoats is more Miss Havisham-on-acid than uptight socialite. Inspired by Beetlejuice, Alice in Wonderland, and Cruella de Vil, the mercurial 21-year-old has let his imagination run wild for fall: midnight blue capes, black-and-whitestripe knee-length vests, and oversize chubbies that reflect 101 shades of brown. (Veron, who considers himself an animal lover, refuses to work with any rare breeds: “That’s for designers who want to be divine and play the queen,” he says.) The goal, he explains, is to create beautifully twisted coats that demystify fur as a status symbol. “My girlfriend and I wear fur to the market, to Sunday brunch,” says Veron, who looks like a Dickens character, from his top hat and fox throw to his spat shoes and walking cane. In order to “feather” the fur, which he sources from the same company used by Givenchy and Prada, Veron developed hidden leather paneling. The technique also makes his pieces more affordable ($4,000 for a sleeveless gilet to $11,000 for a cape). After all, he likes to point out, man has been wearing fur since the dawn of time.
