Spanish Fashion Hits The Tents

spanish fashionThere’s more to Spanish fashion than Balenciaga and Oscar de la Renta. Asociación Creadores de Moda de Espana, or ACME (the Spanish equivalent of Council of Fashion Designers of America), is kicking off a campaign promoting Spanish designers. First stop, the fashion week tents in Bryant Park.

Ana Locking, Carmen March, Juan Duyos and Juanjo Oliva will show their Spring 2010 collections via film installation Sunday afternoon at the Celeste Bartos Forum. Presented in a four-way, split-screen format, the installation was directed by Nicolàs Mèndez, known for his music-video work.

“It’s the only way we could really work together,” says Carmen March, noting the designers’ “very different visions.” March, who usually works in couture, is presenting her third prêt-a-porter collection. Her surf-inspired pieces are meant to reflect late summer in her native Majorca — one dress is structured like a particularly elegant Neoprene wetsuit.

Juanjo Oliva’s collection remakes mid-century silhouettes in African prints. Juan Duyos also looks to the ‘50s and ‘60s for his designs, but with original prints from the American tropical tiki craze. Ana Locking’s structured garments mix materials like latex and organza in burnt red and orange. The palette is a departure from her favorite black, she says, because the world needs more energy and pomp during this economic funk. “We need to enjoy fashion once again,” Locking says. Appropriately, she’s named her collection “Antidote.”

Other Spanish notables, including Oscar de la Renta, the Spanish minister of culture and the president of ACME, will be on hand for a press conference about other ACME initiatives Saturday at the Queen Sofia Institute.
